My third visit to Toronto in almost three years. This time work-related for the first time, attending the IEEE SmartGridComm conference, but thanks to two weekends, there was also time for some nice trips in the nearby area. On the way back, I stopped at two more events in the Netherlands and London, so as a bonus, I’m including a few photos from there as well.
Toronto
What can I say – not much really surprised me. Compared to Glasgow, Toronto seemed beautifully clean this time :) Otherwise, the usual: accommodation in the city center, perfect weather, crowds of people, endless things to do, and of course, a few homeless people on drugs.
Scarborough Bluffs
Scarborough Bluffs are sandstone cliffs, not entirely unlike those in Dover.
They are located a few kilometers east of downtown Toronto with relatively easy
access by train. We took the train to Guildwood station and walked along the lake
all the way to Scarborough Bluffs Park, from where you can then return via the local
train station. At one point, the lake level reached the cliffs, so it probably wouldn't
be possible to pass without getting wet, so we had to go around. I suspected this,
but still hoped that path shown in Mapy.cz would be passable :) Otherwise, this route would
have been ideal for cycling –
route record.
Highland Creek Trail
The second trip we took was in a similar area. We took the train again to Guildwood, but
this time we headed north and along the creek through Highland Creek Park all the
way to Rouge Hill station. The little valley was nice, though it would have gone
faster by bike. The best part was when we reached the lake with beautiful beaches.
Along the way, we stopped at
Shamrock Burgers –
a few years ago they supposedly won the award for the best burgers in Toronto –
route record.
Vegan
Toronto of course offers endless options for vegan dining. The best discoveries for me this time were the fully vegan restaurant
Planta (with several branches in North America), the ice cream shop
Mizzica, where even Vatican monks were waiting in line, and the carrot cake at the chain
Healthy Planet – unfortunately it was so good that I forgot to take a photo, even though we had several of them. I even got to eat on the plane, which is usually not the case – WestJet improvised and made a custom menu for me.
Delft and London
And finally, a few promised photos from the Netherlands (Delft) and London.
